Confessions Of a Tooth Fairy

Young boy with magnifying glass
It’s official!
I have been told in the past and was in state of denial but tonight I finally came to realize:
I’M NUTS!

Some will get mad at me, others will feel compassion and many will laugh for what I’m confessing.

I pulled my six year old’s two front teeth out. Might not be out of the ordinary until you read the following……so here goes.

It’s Thursday night and my six year old is brushing his teeth. It is quite funny sight, since his two front teeth keep flapping back and forth.

Admiring from the distance, thinking my baby is growing up before my eyes, suddenly panic sets in!

Tic……
toc……….
tic…………….
toc…………………..
Time Is Running Out!

Tonight will be the last chance I will have to pull these teeth out since he is going with his dad tomorrow.

I don’t feel bad for my selfish behavior. These teeth are ready to come out. (Trust me I am a registered dental assistant!)

I run to get the floss, paper towel and desensitizing gel. I get to it. All the flapping teeth needed was some gel, a wiggle here and there, and a quick pull with the floss.

YES! They are both out! My son is happy. He has been wanting these teeth out for the longest time.

Then he stares at me for what seemed like ages. (It was really more like thirty seconds… tic, toc)
Is he in shock? Is he so happy?

My son is speechless.
Or maybe he is looking at me with disapproval in his eyes?

It felt like he had me under a magnifying glass(see image above for reference). After feeling guilty for thirty seconds, I came to my senses!

I did nothing wrong. My baby hugged me and thanked me for finally pulling those teeth. He placed the teeth in a bag and they were safely placed underneath his pillow.

When this tooth fairy goes to retrieve the teeth and place money under the pillow, she will feel no guilt. NONE! He was with his father when another baby tooth fell out. I  simply wanted to be there for this one.

Didn’t want to miss it. Wasn’t going to miss it.

Am I crazy? Do I need help?

Maybe, but do not have time to answer that, for this tooth fairy needs to leave money under the pillow before she forgets!

Love the honesty. I must admit it seems a little odd to want to do that.

My daughter had the same wiggly teeth a couple of weeks ago. If I really had tried I am pretty sure we could have got that tooth out. But I didn’t worry about it. She went home and apparently pulled it herself at her mothers house.

If I had known all the little tricks you know, I may have tried. Hmmm… she says she has another wiggly tooth now too… hmmm…

  2. The entire process only happens once in a lifetime, and the loss of each tooth is a precious event to behold, so enjoy it - he will grow up all to fast (now that my 11 year old is already thinking about his first car) and this will be a memory you cherish!

Not crazy at all- Why should dad get the joy of having the tooth fairy come. Moms treasure every little detail of these things. If my daughter was going to be with someone else and I had the chance of missing it, I would do the same thing. Besides it was wiggly, it’s not like it wasn’t ready to come out anyway!

    That’s my girl ;)
I don’t blame you one bit.

  5. man's man says:

should’ve tied one end of the floss to the teeth, and the other end to the door, and then…. SLAM!
thats how we did it when we were kids!

Great story and knowing what little I do about you I commend you for grasping the moment. Carpe Diem! Your son is blessed to have a mother that indeed cherishes the moment. Sure to be remembered! Hold your head high as a proud Mother!

You go mom!! I was lucky enough to help my baby with some in a similar manner. Now she is graduating Cal-Berkeley May 18! It goes by way too fast!! Enjoy and relish these times forever!

When I was a boy, my parents often tied one end of a string around a loose tooth and the other end to a door knob. When they closed the door, the tooth would come out. Didn’t hurt very much.

The first time I saw a dentist was when I was six or seven. He needed to yank out a tooth my parents couldn’t pull out with the string method. The dentist knocked me out with ether.

As I slipped into unconsciousness, it seemed like I was sliding down and around a red-and-white spinning spiral. When I reached the bottom, I woke up. The tooth was gone and my gums hurt a little.

A couple of years later, we changed dentists. We liked our new dentist much better. He used Novocaine.
